Cambridgeshire’s senior squad finished 4th in division 2c in the 2010 championships held at Westfield Table Tennis club in Wellingbourgh.


6 matches were played over 2 days (20th and 21st November), and Cambs had many close encounters in a very competitive division.


The first match saw local county Northamptonshire gain a tight 6-4 victory. In a pulsating match, newcomer Wayne Mason from Wisbech gained two excellent wins whilst Kevin Gray lost an epic 5 set battle over the formidable Cavan Foo Tian Van, which saw the local side edge home.

The next match saw Cambs come up against hot favourites for promotion Suffolk 1.

With Cambs number 1 Martin Gray playing with an injured knee, this was always going to be a difficult match.

Although there were many close games, Suffolk cruised to a rather faltering 9-1 win with Cambs sole victory a narrow 3-1 Mason win over Suffolk’s 3rd player Lee Barnes.

The final match of the first day saw Cambs pitted against Suffolk’s second team.


In yet another very close match, Suffolk won the last 3 matches to secure the draw. Once again, Cambs star man of the 1st day; Wayne Mason contributed an excellent double, and Caroline Wright won the first game for the Cambridgeshire ladies.

Sunday’s events began with a match against a youthful Norfolk side.

Once again, there were many very close matches accumulating in Cambs gaining a 6-4 victory. Both Wayne Mason and Steve Annison lost to Tony Zeqiri 12-10 in the 5th leg, whilst newly arrived Cambs number 1 lady Maria Bolton won both her matches in impressive style.

In the penultimate match, Cambs came up against a very strong Oxfordshire team.

With Mason, Bolton, and Kevin Gray gaining hard-earned maximums, which resulted in a very narrow victory for the light blues.

In the final match of the weekend, Cambs entertained an experienced Leicestershire second team.


Wayne continued his excellent weekend form, whilst Maria Bolton and Kevin Gray finished the second day unbeaten. The final match saw an impressive first win for Helen Arnold.
