Report
The Cambridgeshire Table Tennis Association Closed Championships took place at the Neale Wade Sports Centre in March on Saturday 24th March 2007.
Keith Richardson made up for last season's defeat to Dale Barham in the final of the Men's Singles with a comprehensive straight sets victory over Cambridge League Champion Martin Gray. Richardson also teamed up with former County colleague Mick Harper to beat Gray and his brother Kevin in the Men's Doubles.
However Harper overcame Richardson 11-9 in the fifth leg, in the semi final of Veteran's event and then got the better of Dave Rowell in the final.
For the second successive season there will be a new name on the Ladies trophy, as Maria Boulton playing in the tournament for the first time beat her Haverhill club colleague Caroline Wright in the final.
Wright however turned things around in the Mixed Doubles final when along with Martin Gray she claimed the trophy against Boulton and Tony Reardon.
Caroline, who is expecting her first baby in July also paired up with Helen Arnold to clinch the Ladies Doubles title, in straight games against Alison Edge and Kayleigh Hubbard.
Hubbard, who is still a Cadet has not appeared in the County Championships for a few years, but still claimed three titles. She beat Amy Catlin in both the Cadet Girls Singles and the Junior Girls Singles, and got the better of Victoria Carter in the Under 21 Girls event.
Nick Rate also had wins in three events, overcoming Christian Mohan 11-7 in the fifth of the Junior Boys Singles, followed by success in the Under 21 Boys event against Keiron Mohan. Finally, he paired up with the other Mohan brother Patrick to clinch the Junior Doubles against Christian & Keiron.
Innes Christison also had a good day with a win in the Handicapped Competition over St Ives clubmate Tim Nicholson. Both boys started on 33, but Christison limited Nicholson to just 2 points in a game up to 41.
Christison's second success came in the Drawn Doubles along with Andrew Maguire against Andrew Johnson and Patrick Mohan.
Ian Gregory from St. Neots won the Cadet Boys Singles. After losing the 1st leg to Patrick Mohan he hit back to win the next three games to clinch victory.
Matthew Knott from Wisbech was the winner of the Restricted Singles event (for Players not in the top 8 of the County Men's ranking list). He was made to work hard though in the closest final of the day he just had the beating of Dave Rowell 11-9 in the fifth leg.
On the day there were nearly 250 matches played over 10 hours of table tennis.
