The Cambridgeshire Table Tennis Association held their Closed Championships at the Neale Wade Sports Centre in March, on April 1^st. This was the first time the event has been held at this venue, and turned out to be very suitable.

Dale Barham became the Cambridgeshire Mens Singles Champion for the first time, but had to come back from losing the first leg in the final against former champion and County President Keith Richardson. Barham the No.16 in England teamed up with Peterborough colleague Shaun Murray in the Mens Doubles but lost out to the Veteran pairing of Richardson and Mick Harper.

Denise Jacobi, another player that plays in the Peterborough League won the Ladies Singles at the first attempt. She saw off Clare Macrae (Cambridge) in the semi final before a five set final win over former champion, Alison Edge from March.

Edge joined forces with Janet Nicholls to clinch the Ladies Doubles against Jannett Klinke and Macrae, before teaming up with Mick Harper to win the Mixed Doubles against Bernie Shannon and Jacobi.

Richardson clinched his second title of the day in the Veterans final over Cambridge’s Liwu Wei.

The Peterborough League had more success in the Handicap Singles where Daniel Fielding (+33) overcame James Nicholls (+31).

Nick Rate, aged 15 also from Peterborough had three successes all over St. Ives’ Stephen Pickering in the Restricted Singles, The Constable Cup (Under 21 Men) and the Junior Boys finals. This was the first time these two players had ever played each other in competition, and all three finals were closely contested with Rate just coming out on top in all three. The Restricted Singles win was probably the most impressive as both lads had both claimed some notable scalps on the way to the final.

Christian Mohan just got the better of his younger brother Patrick in a thrilling five setter in the Cadet Boys Singles, then joined with his elder brother Keiran to overcome Rate and his partner Ian Gregory from St. Neots.

Olivia Miller (St Neots) and Amy Catlin (Cambridge) also contested three finals. Miller won the Cadet Girls and the Junior Girls, before Catlin hit back after losing the first leg to take the Under 21 trophy.

Liwu Wei was paired with Daniel Fielding in the Drawn Doubles and they proved too strong for Jannett Klinke and Keiran Mohan.
