Report on the Cambridgeshire Closed Championships 2004/5
We had just 34 entries for our County Tournament this season, four of which came from the Peterborough League. The tournament ran relatively smoothly despite the lack of numbers although the Men’s final was obviously a disappointing non event as Mick Harper was unable to compete after sustaining an injury in the Veteran’s final. Martin Gray was handed a walkover.
Alison Edge overcame last season’s Ladies champion Clare Macrae in the Ladies final.
There were one or two bright points the form of juniors Stephen Pickering from St. Ives, Chad Bassett from Wisbech and the Mohan brothers.
Thanks should go to the Ely League for helping to organise the equipment and setting up on the Friday evening, along with Keith and his family. Thanks also to anyone that helped with umpiring and the 34 that entered.
If the Closed Championships is to carry on next season, we will at least have a few new players from the Peterborough League. I am not sure how well we advertised and pushed the tournament from the local league level as was discussed in previous meetings, but if the Leagues did their best then we have bigger problems than I thought. I feel many local league players feel they have no chance in a County tournament, but they just don’t realise what the tournament is really like.
Many of the Leagues have told us of their Junior programmes, but although there was a reasonable scattering of juniors they were mainly the same faces as previous seasons. How will Juniors ever improve if they don’t get out of their own area to play other Juniors from other leagues?
Veteran’s probably make up around half of the players in local league, but we can only get 9 to enter the Closed tournament.
I not only disappointed with the entry, but with the exception of Keith and Andrew there was no representation from this committee, either playing or helping. The date has been known since the start of the season, so I don’t feel there is much of an excuse for not turning up on the day or even sending a raffle prize. I felt that maybe I took too much on myself, but felt that if I didn’t then nobody else would. I couldn’t even take part in the event myself as I was on the control table all day from 8.30am to 6.30pm.
I would appreciate your comments as to what we should be doing to improve the entry, or should we be even be trying. Are there enough people out there that care?
